Default Improving brakes on a 96 GT Wagon

I love my 96 Legacy Wagon GT but the brakes are a tad disappointing.

Is there an easy way of improving braking performance or do I have to learn to live with what I've got?

You should check out some of the vendors on Import Tuner or (now defunct) Sports Compact Car mags. Perhaps somebody makes adapters for better brakes, or you could fab up some adapters to swap WRX disc brakes onto your Legacy. Where there's a will, there's a way. Better calipers, better pads, bigger rotors....
