Default Checking rear differential on 04 Forester.

There are two plugs on the rear differential, how do I go about checking the fluid level?

What sort of wrench do I need to buy?

What type of oil do I put in if needed?

    Thanks

Um, should just be a 1/2 inch square, comes with an air ratchet set. Anyway, if you are needing to check the fluid in your rear diff, then you might as well replace it. It will only help the diff. Research which fluids work though, or just go with subaru brand stuff.....Hope this helps!

    Thanks.

Do you know if the bottom hole for draining and the top hole for the fluid? Do I just add fluid until it comes out of the top hole?

You are correct, that's how it works. Make sure you can get the top one off first before trying the bottom one!

Thanks! That would be a mess wouldn't it - if you drained it and could not refill.

yes. the top is for adding fluid and the lower is for draining. top it off until it starts to seep and cut it off.
