No headlights or brake lights

Inside the door it said it was built in 1985 but the insurance says its a 1987, so i dunno. But I believe its a 1800 or 1600 hatchback, 4 wheel drive, 4 speed. Yesterday I lost all lights except turn signals and reverse lights. Also one of the interior lights went out too. All these lights are on like 4 different fuses and they are all good. You also have to have the key on before the headlights will come on. Is this normal? But now none of them work. Its my buddies car im just borrowing it. I have tore the entire dash out checking wires and stuff. HELP!!!!
