I have a 2000 Subaru Forester (L Trim) with ~140K. I'm the second owner, and I've had it since 2007. I broke down while driving, and my mechanic said that the tensioner for the timing belt sheared off, and our best bet is to replace the engine.
The car doesn't have any other mechanical problems I know of (yet) and the body isn't rusted, which is incredibly rare for Buffalo. I'd like to put in another engine and continue driving the car into the ground. My labor cost on the engine replacement will be relatively low, since my mechanic is a family friend.
So, my question is: am I going to be able to put any engine from a 2000 Forester into my car? When I look at engines online, they specify that the 6th digit of the VIN is a "6", and I don't know what that means. Are there any other Subaru models/years that have an engine that could be fairly easily used in place of mine?
And finally, does anyone have any recommendations on places to find lower (under 100K) mileage engines?
