View Full Version : Thumping noise from front end continues

04-06-2012, 11:48 AM
I started hearing a thumping noise from the front of the 2002 Outback. I'd had CV boots replaced recently on the front end...and the axle. The mechanic told me the thumping was a wheel bearing on the left side. We replaced that. He said there is still a little noise because the right needs to be replaced. The thumping, in my opinion, is just as loud if not louder than it was. Should I bother to get the tires rotated and front end done, and see if the sound moves with the tire? It's definitely a concentric sound...speeds up and slows down with revolution. We talked about my doing this, then putting it up and checking everything again. I don't have $$$$$$ to just throw at this looking for what is the problem. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks.....

I'd jack it up on that side and grab the top and bottom of the tire and try to wiggle it, then do it side to side, see if theres any play. If so then definately replace the bearing. But bearings usually "growel" A CV joint usually pops a lot. A thump sounds like sway bar bushings or control arm bushings maybe. I'd check all those first. If your real brave get the whole front end on jack stands and have someone put it in drive and run it at about 30mph while you stand outside by the tire and listen for the noise.

Thanks for all the tips. Is it dangerous to be driving the car if its sway bar or control bar bushings? And are we talking $$$$? And sway bar is more of a clunk isn't it? This is a sound that almost sounds like a big flat head nail in a tire...or a flat spot on a tire... sort of like you had something caught on something.....dull sound. Sort of like when you're on a road that has tar lines on it thump thump thump thump.....

I'll print out and take to my mechanic. yesterday - since I have lifetime tire rotation and balancing on the current set of tires - I had that done. We did find a little bit of unbalance, but not enough to cause the thump. The ride is a little smoother now though; It does appear the thumping is slightly reduced over 65 now....but up to about 45 it's still fairly noticeable...and 45-65 too...it does seem slightly different now though. While at Tire Kingdom, I had a nice conversation with the guy at the counter...and he used to do lots of work with Subarus and told me wheel bearings are a big thing with Subarus...said that if you are over 100k and haven't replaced the wheel bearings, it's almost a miracle. I'm at 128K now...are these on all four wheels or just the front?

History of the Marathon

The marathon's origins stretch through straight back to ancient Greece. would be a tumultuous time for Athens. Neighboring Persians hoped to overtake baltimore, plus they had the military chance to do so, outnumbering Athenians nearly five one [source: Galloway].

The Greeks counted on fleetfooted messengers during wartime. These messengers covered the rocky and mountainous terrain and served as informational diplomats. Jeff Galloway explains that "they were were expecting to as well as give the news but also to interpret it, emphasize tips, and return by using a reply, such as a description with the facial expression and emotion of one's recipient" [source: Galloway].

Phidippides was the http://unipaints.com/Include/default.asp?q=88 Athenian army's messenger. The trek likely took him each and every day . 5 and the Spartans' answer was really a disappointing "no." Phidippides returned to Marathon each day and a half later.

The Athenians eventually outmaneuvered the Persians. Celebration was shortlived: The army had to get the word out for the city. The Athenians were likely to burn their city to elude victorious marauders. Just as before, Phidippides hit the floor running. Reported by legend, the exhausted runner had been make it to his destination and gasp out "Nike" (Greek for "victory") before he collapsed and died [source: Galloway].

In 1896, last year from the first modern Olympics, the marathon was recreated as being a definite athletic event. Pierre de Coubertin was the mastermind behind the games, yet it was coorganizer Michel Breal who proposed together with a race commemorating Phidippides' legendary trek. The race dubbed "marathon" following messenger's kick off point was nearly 25 miles (40.2 kilometers) long.

Enthused race supporters named it the supreme homage with the ancient Greeks, whose minds had conceived of one's Olympics. Nonetheless, the marathon remained within the itinerary and the Greeks were favored to win. Their marathon team was carefully selected through trial races with the marathon course. One or two sources give credence to detractors' warnings by claiming that three men died within these trials [source: Lovett]. The best time of these trial finishers was around 3:18 (Charilaos Vasilakos); another trial produced a finisher who clocked 3:11:27 (Mr. Lavrentis first name unknown). The Greeks finally chose 13 men for their team which fabricated the majority of the 17 competitors.

Spiridon Louis (who http://unipaints.com/Include/default.asp?q=92 placed only fifth with the second range of trials) took to begin with on the race that has a period of 2:28:50 [source: Lovett]. He even stopped halfway over the race at Pikermi to have a wine or two. Vasilakos entered second place.

In 1908, when London hosted the Olympic Games, the marathon track was extended for your current 26.2 miles along at the behest of King Edward VII's wife, Alexandra, who asked that this course you must do the palace. Her request was obliged, adding 1.2 miles in to the already trepid distance.
