View Full Version : Tire cupping

I need some Subaru owner's opinions on tire cupping. I have some cupping on the inside of all four tires. It is not bad cupping, I only noticed it because of my limited mechanic training. I had an alignment done a few months ago and everything was perfect. I was told by a tire company that it was my struts. I got a second opinion from a trusted mechanic and he said that it most likely was something else. None of the usual "strut" tests indicated bad struts. It doesn't bounce or track bad like a vehicle normally would with bad struts. I called a Subaru dealership and he said that struts don't go bad at 70,000 miles. Anyway, I have cupping, does anyone have any thoughts?

I forgot to say that it is a 2005 Forester XS w/manual trans. It has Pirelli P5 tires on it and I rotate them every oil change.

How many miles since your last wheel balance? Cupping is usually caused by either out of balance and /or bad shocks(struts).
Do you live in a climate where the roads get salted/sanded during the winter? Here in Ontario it's a constant battle to keep the sand from building up on the inside of the wheels. They can hold a surpisingly heavy amount of dirt. I put mine on the hoist every week or two to clean the rims off.

Thanks for the input. I live in S. Utah and we do get lots of snow and salted roads and I take it off road for hunting...etc. I'm betting that there could be some buildup on the wheels and suspension, although I do wash it regularly. I'll check to have the wheel balance, because that seems to be the only culprit left. Subaru dealership said struts look fine.
