I purchased a new Outback in April 2008. Have only driven it about 1,260 miles so far. Car has not been in for any service. Recently received a notice from Subaru saying " Our records show that your mileage is probably now around 1,254 miles....". This is way below average mileage, how do they know? Is there a data link system secretly stored aboard this vehicle?
Thanks

I have no idea, that is weird. Did it come with an on-star or gps? Anything that would connect it with a computer somewhere?

Nope, no gps, On-Star, or anything like that. So far I haven't found any clues but will share the info if I do.

No dealer service? That is way weird, I would contact the return address on the letter and go from there. Or just go straight to Subaru of America and ask to speak to a higher up?

Received reply from Customer/Dealer Services Dept. today. No magic. They utilize a program containing algorithms to estimate my mileage depending on service visits. At the 618 mile mark I went in for an alignment correction. Based on that mileage and date they were able to guesstimate my mileage which was, to me, uncanny in it's accuracy. Guess I'm becoming too predictable in my old age.

WTH, that's kinda cool, but eery at the same time!
