could be the catalytic converter has been clogged or failed?

That's odd. Does the engine light come on once you put the car in drive? Have you gotten a code on it?

So the intake valves were stock open on the #4 cylinder due to oil starved engine...thank you wife...so a good used one will be installed. Also did have a code but for a solenoid that failed.

I would like to agree with a possible failed catalytic converter (http://www.car-stuff.com/catalyticconverter.htm). A catalytic converter does not normally break down on its own. There should be a fine mix of fuel-to-air ratio in order for a combustion engine to function. Otherwise, other components in the engine and exhaust system will surely fail. Hope this sheds some light to your inquiry.
You need to check the ECU with a scan tool or a COBB accessport can do it. Sounds like your running way to hot. There is a number of things that can do that. Running lean, CAT problem, intercooler failure, oilcooler failure, heat soak issures. check the the flashing engine light with a scan tool
