Yup I had a very similar encounter and I had to make an ignition coil replacement. For those who do not know, try a hitachi ignition coil (http://www.drivewire.com/brand/hitachi/ignition-coil/) as it is very efficient, Just like to share my thoughts.

Is it getting heat as soon as started...? Or it has the same problem while driving or reached the destination after a while....? Is your gauge is indicating you that what problem that you are getting exactly....................?

An ignition coil can cause an engine to run hot??? How? If the coil is bad, I would think the engine just wouldn't run.
