GM Motorama Firebird III Prototypes

From GM Motorama Firebird III designer Norm James's sketch within the envisioned Motorama crowd came a fresh line of styling studies, starting around March 1957. The missile had four dominant secondstage fins midway along its length, set at 45 degrees in to the launch rail. On his own initiative, James made a fullsized string drawing of the missile/fighter car. It had four fins, keyed towards location within the rear wheels. But James felt the back didn't look right, simply because of the long, barren, extended overhang. "Stefan [Habsburg] when i were engaged with this big planklooking afterbody" he reflected, "so at many point Stefan walked roughly the board and said, 'What once we try such as this?' Whereupon he proceeded incorporate a significant dorsal fin also, the two trailing lower skegs."

"My first thought was, 'hey, it's not possible to accomplish this! You can't integrate a threefin set with a fourfin set';" recalled James. "But I was able to also see immediately that Stefan had invented the mass balance the design was missing. "Once rrt had been finished, we contacted Bob McLean to take a look," said James. "He seemed pleased and told us to prevent including the Club de Mer version but to also establish a second mockup within the new design."

James isn't certain whether Earl saw the missile/fighter mockup previously, really clean a good venture he previously, because Earl often roamed the studios after all others had left in the night.

In this case, though, Earl unlocked the studio door and walked in. McLean was standing next to the Club de Mer mockup; James and Habsburg stood by their newer theme model, hearts pumping.
